Eco-Friendly Easter Egg Hunt

The best part about living in different parts of the world is you get to celebrate different cultures and festivals. The more you learn about a new culture and their holidays, you understand they are quite similar to yours but with some variation. Easter celebration is one of those. I never celebrated Easter as a child, but now my daughters are always super excited for this holiday, especially the Easter Egg hunt!

We love this version of celebrating new life and beginnings. The kids have an Easter egg hunt at their school and then we plan one in our neighborhood. The happiness on their face as they hunt for those cute pastel eggs is so pure and priceless. But as a mom and someone who cares deeply about the environment, I get upset about one part of this event. The kids get home with their baskets overflowing with plastic eggs that get cracked open and how we have a mountain of small plastic toys like squishies or small cars or fidget toys or pop-its. The kids love to receive them but after 48 hrs their novelty wears off. They end up in the trash soon after, and eventually in the landfill somewhere.

This year I was able to convince the kids and together, we decided to bring a change in ourselves! We scratched our heads thinking what could be our “eco friendly” egg fillers? And we decided to make some fun tokens! Let’s see how we made them.

DIY Easter Egg Fillers Tokens:

1 8”x8” card stock (light colored) or cardboard from a shipping box

Acrylic paints

Foam brush

Colorful pens/markers

Scissors

Toilet paper roll tube

Scrap paper

Steps:

Using the foam brush and acrylic colors, color the card stock in different colors. Either go with bright and bold colors or use pastel colors.

Take the toilet paper roll tube and fold one end (circle) in the form of an egg. Alternatively, if you have any stamps (bunnies, carrot, egg shaped), just use those.

Once the color is dry, dip the egg stamp in a darker color than the color of your painted card stock, and stamp all over. Wait for it to dry.

Cut the paper into 2inch x 1inch rectangle tokens.

Now start writing FUN messages on each token.

Here are some ideas:

  • Ice cream night

  • Movie night

  • Take me to the Park

  • Take me to the Library

  • You have won $1 from your parent

  • No chore day

  • Get a hug from your loved one

  • Call a friend for a playdate

If you are using brown cardboard from a shipper box, you can skip coloring. And instead after writing the messages, put on sequins/gems/glitter/stickers around or just stamp!

Fold the tokens and put them into the eggs!

I know these tokens might not sound as fun for everyone, so we filled some eggs with quarters, and there were two lucky eggs with $1 bills! 🙂

We re-use our plastic eggs year after year. And hope you are too!!

I am a tad bit late posting this so you save this for your next Egg-cellent Easter Celebration!! :)
